INTRODUCTION |
|
On May 22, 2018, Sterlite Copper (Sterlite), the copper manufacturing plant of Vedanta Limited in Thoothukudi in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, was shaken by a massive protest. The protestors, who maintained that the copper plant was polluting the environment, were livid over the proposed expansion of the plant’s second unit, which was expected to double production capacity per year.
The massive gathering of over 200,000 protestors was the culmination of 100 days of protest against the proposed expansion. The local administration took steps like imposing Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure prohibiting assembly of people in and around the plant but the restless crowd turned violent and damaged public property. In the police firing which followed, ten persons were killed and many others injured.
